Contemporary apartment in Kypseli
Located in the Kypseli neighbourhood of Athens, within a 1970s apartment building, changing contemporary needs and modes of living called for a radical rethinking of the fragmented original plan. The rigid boundaries of standardised layouts — the so-called hall-office and fully independent functions — were reconsidered, with the aim of creating a new, functional and significantly brighter apartment.
With the introduction of an open-plan layout, the private spaces were repositioned: the bedroom was moved to the brightest part of the apartment, while the bathroom was placed opposite, freeing up circulation and forming an intermediate, unified space between them. This space becomes the core of the apartment, accommodating the open living and kitchen area.
Within this bright, open space, the original wooden floors and timber window frames were restored. The kitchen is now centrally located, occupying the position of the former bathroom. Dionysos marble — a material widely used in the 1970s — combined with a concrete table that recalls a contemporary mosaic, acts as a visual point of reference both within the space and in relation to collective memory.
